FG TASKS STATE GOVERNMENT ON FOOD SUFFICIENCY

The Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has called on State Governments to join hands with the Federal government to contribute to agricultural development, in order to achieve self sufficiency in food production.

Prof. Osinbajo, who made this call at the 4th National discourse, with the theme “Food security: Unleashing Nigeria’s Natural Potentials for Self Sufficiency’’, organised by The Companion, an association of Muslim Men in Business and the Professionals held at the University of Lagos, Akoka.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari has set a clear direction on self sufficiency and food production, when he said, ‘’Nigerians must produce what they eat and consume what they produce’’, which informed the decision of the federal government to set a substantial budgetary allocation to agriculture.

“The Anchor Borrowers Programme of the Federal Government has given credit totalling N120.6Billion to small scale farmers, where most of them had cultivated 12 different commodities such as rice, wheat, soya beans, poultry and others across the 36 States.

“The programme is now digitized, and all farmlands involved are GPRS mapped, so we know where the farms are”.

He stressed that bioometric data of the farmers were captured, electronic cards have been issued to every one of them and all the specific tools delivered were recorded; this has enhanced the traceability and enhanced productivity, so the farmers could be tracked.

The Vice President added that government had launched the fertilizer programme to improve local blending capacity, in collaboration with the government of Morocco.

He disclosed that today, Nigeria has 11 fertilizer blending plants, with a total capacity of about 2.1m metric tonnes, this he said had reduced cost of 50kg bag of fertilizer from N13,000 to N6,000.

In her remarks, the Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, said the hosting of the event was a symbolic representation of the fact that professionals with the same religious beliefs could live up to the responsibility of spiritual upliftment of their members, while at the same time awaken them to their roles in nation building.

She added that Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration understood the importance of collective responsibility to nation building, hence the adoption of the mantra, “Building our Future Together”.

“Our administration is committed to the Agricultural sector. We appreciate the capacity of Agriculture as an avenue for massive employment generation and plans have reached advanced stage for a scheme in partnership with the Federal Government called the
Out-Grower Scheme.

Under the scheme, 10,000 of our youths will be provided with land, inputs, farming equipment and guaranteed buy back’’, she stated.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Chairman of the event, who was a former Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, said the only way to address poverty was to encourage the youths to go into farming, as insecurity could be traced to hunger, which in turn breeds frustration and aggression, adding that it was easy to mobilise hungry people for rebellion and any form of criminal activities.

Aregbesola noted that the nation needed enhanced farming techniques, as well as creating an enabling environment for farmers to have access to loan.

In his presentation, the President of the Nigeria Academy of Engineering and Guest speaker at the occasion, Prof. Fola Lasisi, revealed that Nigeria had always considered herself as the giant of Africa, yet the people are hungry, poor and malnourished, saying food insecurity was a major issue of concern.

He said government must go back and use technology to create happiness for the people, calling on stakeholders to join hands with the government to empower the young ones to fight hunger ravaging in the land.

OGUN TRANSPORT COMMITTEE MEMBER CALLS FOR SUSPENSION OF ERRING MEMBER

Having illegally paraded himself as the Chairman of an arm of Motorcycle Riders Association – (AMORAN) in Ogun State which is against the proscription order and Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) reached by Government’s Committee on Transport in the State, a member of Sub Committee of the Association has recommended that Mr Monsuru Balogun, popularly known as Afuye be suspended.

Oseni, who made the submission when speaking with the newsmen at Iwe-Irohin Press Centre in Abeokuta on Tuesday, appealed to the State government to urgently arrest the selfish and ugly development in the proscribed Motorcycle Riders’ union.

It would be recalled that Governor Dapo Abiodun-led Ogun state government had on assumption of office in June proscribed all activities of transport unions and constituted a Committee to temporarily oversee the affairs of the unions in the state with a view to finding lasting solutions to the crises rocking them.

Consequently, the Government Committee formed various sub committees composed of members of all the various transport unions, including AMORAN.

The sub committees were to work with State the State Committee pending the resolutions of the crises as well as instil discipline and sanity in the affairs of the transport unions in the state.

Contrary to the MOU, Monsuru Balogun, has been allegedly parading himself around the state as the Chairman of the proscribed transport union.

He has also been alleged to have contracted thugs in AMORAN uniforms to as touts who daily forcefully sell ‘Motorcycle Riders’ tickets, generating revenue illegally and not remitting it to State government coffers.

Speaking against the irregularities and misconduct of Afuye across the state, Alhaji Taiwo Oseni a member of the committee constituted by the government urged government to suspend Monsuru Balogun for running foul of the agreement reached when the Sub Committee was constituted.

He stated that, although Afuye is also a member of AMORAN Sub Committee but he lacked the power to act like the substantive Chairman of the Association.

He opined that if such illegal acts of Afuye were condoned, then the lasting solutions currently seeking in order to resolve the crisis in the union might be thwarted.

He lamented “It’s just unfortunate that Monsuru Balogun who is an aspirant for AMORAN Chairmanship and member of the Sub Committee, set up by the State government could be parading himself around and even on the radio as an authentic Chairman when the union leadership has been disbanded and elections are yet to be conducted to various elective positions.

“He has forcefully worked against the order of the Transport Committee, set up by Ogun state government”.

Oseni stressed that Afuye had the audacity to also threaten genuine members who attemped to question or obstruct his hired thugs with charms.

He enjoined all the aspirants jostling for various unions’ chairmanship to adhere to the State Government’s directives, workings of the State Committee and Sub-Committee.

He noted that their ambitions must be regulated through some necessary trainings and knowledge of the rules pertaining to the operational procedures of the unions through the tutelage of the Chairmen who are in the Sub-Committee being setup by the Governor Abiodun.

Alhaji Oseni urged them to emulate to Alhaji Olawale Ajiboye popularly called MTN, the erstwhile chairman of the union who offered himself to serve in the Sub Committee being an experienced transport unionist with the view to bring about the desired resolution and subsequent hold elections to fill the vacant positions

He explained that despite the experience of MTN in the union, he didn’t impose himself on the union but emerged as member of the Sub Committee has since been working to ensure that a peaceful electoral process that would return AMORAN healthier and better to generate more revenue for government.

According to him, “One of our followers, known as Igwe on Monday was attacked with charms. Others were attacked in around the state, including Sagamu, Ijebu-Igbo and Abeokuta South by these boys loyal to Afuye. I am pleading that the Government appointed Transport Union committee should look into this matter urgently before it goes out of hand.”

“There were disagreement last week among our boys and boys of a sister union, (ACOMORAN) in Abeokuta. This act shouldn’t be extended to other unions if we have to avoid creating unnecessary tension in our in Ogun state as a whole. Alhaji Ajiboye is the authentic chairman, we know him as a gentleman.”

Our findings revealed that Afuye has constituted and empowered, with uniform, identity cards, some individuals whose identities could not be asertained by members of AMORAN.

We also gathered the revenue being generated was not remitted to government coffers.

OGUN GOVT ASSURES WOMEN OF BETTER REPRESENTATION

Ogun State government has assured women, irrespective of their political, religious or tribal differences, of better representation in appointments to various political offices.

The Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele gave this assurance while playing host to the executive members of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Ogun State Chapter, led by its Amirah, Alhaja Kudirat Yeni Rabiu in her office at Oke-mosan.

Engr. Salako-Oyedele, said the issue bordering on representation of women in governance had been brought to the attention of the State Governor, Dr. Dapo Abiodun, saying government believed in the capability of the women folk and that appointments would be merit based.

“When it comes to merit, women do very well, so I can assure you that women would have good representation in whatever appointment that will be made in this government’’, she noted.

Ogun state government has expressed her readiness to partner with business Investors and stakeholders in different fields, to enable her achieve the aims of attracting more investors to come and invest in the state, through its Investment Promotion Council initiative which would be headed by an Investment banker.

The hint was dropped today in a Press Release e-signed by Oluwaseun Boye, Press Officer, Office of the deputy Governor of the state.

The Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele who stated this while playing host to the management team of Gateway Mortgage Bank, led by the Managing Director, Mr Olawale Osisanya, said the present administration in the state, led by Prince Dapo Abiodun, would leave no stone unturned towards broadening investments in the state.

“Attracting more investors in the state would not only boost the state Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) but also increase demand for both residential and commercial purposes in real estate and property development” she said
.

On the expansion of branches and other challenges, the bank is facing, she pledged government’s support in order to actualize its dream, charging the management to join hands with allied agencies in the housing sectors to help provide affordable housing units by coming to the aid of prospective home owners through its various loan facilities.

He said the bank currently has three branches, in Abeokuta, Ota and Mowe-Ibafo areas, adding that the bank was doing everything possible to increase its network so that more people could have access to Gateway Mortgage bank.

“We have applied for additional branches from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to be situated in Sagamu, Ilaro and Ifo. We also have about 54 members of staff across the state at Points of Payment (POP) who move round to make transactions with people especially where there were no banking facilities’’ he said.

YORUBA LEADERS PRESENT SOUTH WEST POSITION TO BUHARI

The Afenifere (Egbe Ilosiwaju Yoruba)recently paid a courtesy visit to the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice,ProfessorYemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa,Abuja to formally present the concerns of the region as regards the imperativeness on its position.

The Position reads:

A: INTRODUCTION:

Your Excellencies, we the delegates and Leaders of Afenifere (Egbe Ilosiwaju
Yoruba) are here: We have with us long-established political leaders of the South-
West including the Asiwaju and our “heritage Governors”!

We come to rejoice with Your Excellencies, President Muhammadu Buhari and
Vice-President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for your recent re-election for a second term in
office. We are proud of our contributions to your victory through the Yoruba Summit Conference held at the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre on January 29, 2019. There, we passed a well-applauded motion urging all the people of Western Nigeria origin of voting age to vote for your re-election by virtue of your people-oriented and welfarist APC political programmes and performance. We are happy the people complied. Attached to this script is a copy of our motion for your support and congratulatory message published in the Nation newspaper on 28th May, 2019.

We are also here to commend Your Excellency for your recognition of June 12 as a landmark in the political history of Nigeria and for naming the National Stadium in Abuja after Chief M K O Abiola, the hero of Nigeria’s pro-Democracy struggle.

We are equally glad to note and commend Your Excellency for your efforts to empower the 36 States in Nigeria to have control of the Police as a measure of improving security and for your giant stride in the field of Agriculture, social intervention, revival and modernization of rail transportation, continuing efforts to complete the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway among other achievements.

B: ISSUES OF PARAMOUNT INTEREST TO SOUTH-WEST NIGERIA.
Please permit us, Mr. President, to submit our humble request of the following 5
major issues of paramount importance to South-West Nigeria in particular and the
unity, progress and happiness of the entire country in general.

1: Security: The huge cost not withstanding, it may be considered
worthwhile to take a bold step in combating crime and improving on security by improving on the apparent shortage of the manpower in the Nigeria Police Force and by extending control of the Police from the State to Local Government level. By this, we humbly suggest that Mr. President should reflect deeply and consider recruitment, training, equipment and deployment of Nigerian Police on the basis of 774 Local Governments listed in the First Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Added to this is training the general public on the need to improve on their individual vigilance and awareness of movement of strangers passing through or moving into their neighborhood. Imbibing such a habit and practice will be a tremendous help or service to the Police and other Security Agents as regards “intelligence” support especially now that most people have access to individual means of communication (telephone handsets).

Mr. President Sir, please permit me one more observation on the issue of SECURITY. In apparent desire to supplement your efforts, the newly-elected Governors of Western Nigeria extraction, have this very day, Tuesday the 25th June 2019, held a meeting in Ibadan to map out strategies to eradicate kidnapping and violent attacks. They and other states will surely need more financial subvention and support.

2: Education: “Free Universal and Compulsory Education” had been practiced with remarkable success in some parts of Nigeria in the past. Mr. President may consider re-introducing the programme and make it compulsory at all levels and all over the country as a lasting gift to Nigeria in his final term in office. Such a bold step though very expensive will revolutionize and catapult the entire nation to the NEXT HIGHER LEVEL.

3: Youth Employment: One of the obvious advantages that will accrue from Education Programme referred to in para 2 above which will include Basic, Technical, Skill Acquisition, Digitalization and ICT Programmes will be to open wide gates to Youth Employment in Nigeria and in the Diaspora.

Thank you, Mr. President, for re-introducing HISTORY in our school curriculum. By doing this, you have told us fellow-Nigerians a proverb of world-famous Roman Senator, Lawyer and Orator MARCUS TULIUS CICERO. He said and I quote “NOT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE YOU WERE BORN, IS TO LIVE THE LIFE OF AN INFANT FOR EVER!”

4: Federalism: We seriously recommend clinging to the spirit and letters of
our Federal Constitution. This is one sure way of achieving the desired goal
of unity even in diversity, mutual respect, tolerance and giving true meaning
to the opening phrase of our Constitution that is, “WE THE PEOPLE”.

We will be a greater nation if we sincerely practice true Federalism and THINK and ACT as NIGERIANS rather than as champions of the smaller units we were born into. Our big size is an asset worthy of preservation.

Good examples of big size, hard work and prudent spending are the USA, China and India. It is not with violence or hate speeches but with mutual trust, self-respect and tolerance that we will speedily achieve the lofty destiny of this great country – NIGERIA.

5: Power Supply and Agriculture: We have already commended your Administration on its remarkable achievements in the field of Agriculture. But the country asks for more, especially in the field of afforestation, irrigation and revival of those agricultural products like Cocoa, Groundnuts, Cotton, Palm Products and processing them for domestic consumption and export as Malaysia which borrowed seedlings from us has now gone far ahead of us.

As to Electricity, we are aware of your efforts which must be more than doubled to improve on the pace of industrialization, productivity and more comfort for all Nigerians.

C: Prayers: Finally, we are here to thank God on your behalf and to intensify our prayers for your greater achievements in all your efforts to eradicate corruption, improve on security and the good luck to have equally dedicated, disciplined and transparent co-workers so that you will leave a legacy that Nigeria and indeed the entire world will never forget. I have been asked to pray for you in Yoruba that “IWÁJÚ LOJÚGUN NGBÉ. ÀSE YÈ NI ALÁKÀN NSE PO”. Olootu Ijoba, Muhammadu ǫmǫ Buhari wà á șe àșe yè, wà á șe àșe yorí sí rere!! This means you will EXCEL and be PROGRESSIVE. I will add a prayer you are more familiar with and say,“Ihidina siratal mustakim” May the Almighty and Merciful God guide all of us to the right way to greater success and happiness.
.

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH BY PRINCE ADEDAPO ABIODUN, MFR, THE ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC) ON HIS ANNOUNCEMENT AS WINNER OF THE OGUN STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION BY INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION ON SUNDAY, MARCH 10, 2019.

It is with immense gratitude to Almighty God, the Author that I accept the task that has just been thrust upon me by the good and great people of Ogun State.

Though the race was tough, the challenge tasking, the odds enormous and the obstacles many, we give glory to God for His immense mercy and boundless compassion over us.

Campaigns and elections are now over. It is time to start harnessing the huge God-given human and natural resources of our State, for rapid development for the overall interest and benefits of our people.
To my fellow contestants, we have all participated to the best of our abilities vying for the exalted office, which can only be occupied by one person at a time.

I, therefore, most humbly, and unconditionally, extend my hand of fellowship to my compatriots from other parties, and indeed, all those who contested with me at the APC primaries for the party ticket. Like our campaign theme states: “Igbega Ipinle Ogun, ajose gbogbo wa ni”, the development of Ogun State is the collective duty of all. With the love of Ogun in our hearts, we all have something to offer. Our government will be very willing to take the benefits of shared knowledge and experiences. This victory is not for me and my party alone; it is the victory for the good and great people of Ogun State.

Our government, your government, shall give Ogun State a focused and qualitative governance that is responsive, open and accountable to the people; a government which the people can rightly and justifiably call “our government”.

For rapid industrialization and infrastructural development, we will proactively create and promote the enabling environment for a public-private sector partnership, which is fundamental to the creation of an enduring economic development and individual prosperity of the people of Ogun.

We shall also focus on enhancement of agriculture and upgrade of rural roads in order to increase the output of food and cash crops, create wealth for real farmers and ease the movement of farm produce to the markets within and outside the state.

The local government administration is the closest to the people. We will return relevance to the third tier of government in Ogun State and create a beneficial synergy that will quicken the pace of development in our local government areas.

Finally, I must not fail to put on record, my heart-felt appreciation of the unique support I received from the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Exellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, His Excellency; the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (GCON) SAN, the Chairman of our great party, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), our National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our Baba and one of the foremost progressive politicians in Nigeria, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, party stalwarts and members across Nigeria, especially in Ogun State, friends, associates, members of the Dapo Abiodun Campaign Organisation (DACO), volunteers, media men and women, security agencies and all those who made this collective victory possible.

My dear wife and wonderful children,
your support and sacrifices kept me going.

Finally, I assure everybody that I appreciate your immeasurable support, and will not take you for granted.

Thank you very much and God bless our dear Ogun State.

Signed:

Prince Adedapo Abiodun
