The leadership of Nigeria Union of Journalists has warned politicians against disagreements or differences that are capable of building into violence of any sorts.
This warning was given by the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, Comrade Wole Shokunbi at the end of the council’s meeting held recently at Iwe Irohin, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta Ogun state.
Comrade Shokunbi observed that whenever politicians involved themselves in dangerous and deadly intra and inter party wrangling they endangered the lives of Journalists and make the practise of Journalism practically impossible.
He said it was about time politicians devised peaceful means of settling whatever differences they have since politics, as it is often said, is not a “do or die” game, advising that in life one’s worst enemy today could be one’s best friend tomorrow.
Shokunbi advised politicians to know that nothing in life is eternal. “All positions remain ephemeral since no one lives for ever. Life is about winning some and loosing some If you loose today you could win tomorrow. You should also understand that no position in life is permanent. Do not live like an epicure but allow epic story to be written about you long after you are gone”, he explained.
Shokunbi revealed that the leadership of the union had been disturbed by the incalculable accusations and counter-accusations that are tearing political parties into shreds, interspersing families and also turning siblings against one another. He therefore enjoined the leadership of all the political parties engrossed in this to resolve them as quickly as possible.
The NUJ leader stated that the well-being and lives of his fellow Journalists were important to them and that the leadership of the union would do all in its power to protect them, warning that if the political parties failed to settle their rifts now they might be forced to stop Journalists from reporting all political activities in the state.
Shokunbi said Journalists in the state were rearing to go in terms of minutes by minutes reportage of the activities but their zeal and desires are being thwarted when political disagreements are settled with bullets, machetes and other deadly weapons, particularly when some politicians see the Journalists as enemies for trying to balance their reportage of events pertaining to their activities.
He said Journalists are not enemies of the state but also patriotic and progressive people who are equally desirous of a peaceful and forward looking country where the entire citizens could collectively pride in.
